Calendar of Events - November 2014 to February 2015

It is a good idea to contact the organizer or task leader of the events before attending so that we can cater for numbers and arrange lifts if needed. All telephone numbers are Basingstoke area (01256) unless the code is given - you should also be able to contact the leader during the 2 days leading up to the task on the leader's mobile phone (the number is in the newsletter). Meet at 10am at the project site or at the toolshed at 9.30, unless other times are given. The numbers are OS grid references of the meet up point for the projects. Some of the sites are difficult to find, so if it's your first visit to a site, we'd recommend meeting us at the toolshed and then following the leader (who should know where he/she is going!) to the site.
Details in red are changes from the programme published in the newsletter.

October 2014
task Sun 12th Pamber Forest Coppicing
We are continuing our autumn coppicing program at Pamber.
Tea/Coffee, refreshments and biscuits will be provided by the leader.
Please contact the leader and look for their email with the task details beforehand.
Leader on 01635 49304.
social Sat 18th Mike's House Quiz
This evening sees the return of the BCV DIY Quiz Night.
The idea is that each person brings along their own set of 20 questions so they can be quiz master for one round. The subject for your round is up to you so feel free to be creative!
Please also bring along some drinks and nibbles to help the evening along. Start time is 7.30pm.
Contact on 01635 268482 for more info.
task Sun 26th Ashford Hill Scrub bash
We will be visiting Ashford Hill NNR, the only National Nature Reserve on BCV's patch. Managed by Natural England, National Nature Reserves are designated because they are deemed to be the finest examples of their habitats around, in this case lowland neutral grassland.
We will be helping with the scrub management regime.
Please contact the leader beforehand to find out the details. The site can be wet so parking can be tricky.
Leader on 01189 700155.
November 2014
task Sun 2nd Ecchinswell Pond Pond maintenance
Please note this is not a BCV-led task but is an event which BCV members have traditionally attended and for which we provide additional tools.
Join the people of Ecchinswell in the management of their village pond, a home to much wildlife including the Great Crested Newt.
Barbecue lunch is usually provided to all those who turn up to help.
Start time on site will be from 9.30.
Leader on 01635 268482.
task Sun 11th Ashford Hill Scrub bash
We continue our work at this special site, the only NNR (National Nature Reserve, designated because they are the best examples of their habitat type) in our area.
We will be scrub bashing to maintain this remnant of neutral grassland which is relatively untouched by modern farming practices and therefore rich in wildlife.
Tea/Coffee, refreshments and biscuits will be provided by the leader.
Please contact the leader and look out for their email advertising the task to find out the details.
Leader on 01189 700155.
task Sun 30th Pamber Forest Coppicing
This marks the first of several tasks at BCV's adopted home site. Coppicing was a traditional practice of producing materials from underwood, usually Hazel. It creates a series of open spaces in different stages of growth and each stage is exploited by a range of different species. The high biodiveristy value this creates ensures that this practice remains a priority of woodland conservation.
BCV will be mimicking this practice by cutting the hazel, creating the odd habitat pile and burning the brash on a nice bonfire.
Tea/Coffee, refreshments and biscuits will be provided by the leader.
Please contact the leader and look out for their email advertising the task to find out the details.
Leader on 420818.
December 2014
meet Tue 2nd Dave's House Committee Meeting
Regular meeting to discuss the running of BCV. All welcome.
Contact on 420818 for more info.
task Sun 7th Aldersbrook Farm Scrub bash
The combined effect of BCV's scrub removal and the establishment of a grazing regime by the owner should now be shaping the site for the benefit of wildlife. A lot of progress has been made in clearing the scrub alongside the brook and it is now almost gone. We will be shifting our attention to the scrub on the other side of the field again this winter.
Tea/Coffee, refreshments and biscuits will be provided by the leader.
Please contact the leader and look out for their email to find out the details.
Leader on 07848 007947.
social Sat 20th Dave's House Christmas Party
Come along for BCV's traditional Christmas gathering. This year Dave is hosting at his house and is asking each attendee to bring along something to share. It does not have to be festive related but please make sure you contact him so there aren't any duplicates!
Look out for the details before the event.
Contact on 420818 for more info.
task Sun 21st Pamber Forest Coppicing
In keeping with BCV tradition, we are back again at Pamber to continue the coppicing programme for the last task before the Christmas break.
Tea/Coffee, refreshments and biscuits will be provided by the leader and there will probably also be some leftovers on offer from the previous night's bash.
Please contact the leader and look out for their email advertising the task to find out whereabouts we will be working.
Leader on 01635 49304.
January 2015
social Sun 4th Silchester Winter Walk
Join us for a stroll through the countryside around historic Silchester, a place steeped with Roman history and excellent wildlife refuges.
Please contact the leader beforehand and look out for their email to find out the details.
Contact on 01189 700155 for more info.
task Sun 11th Stubbington Down Scrub bash
Come along to our first task at this new site just outside of Kingsclere.
This area of chalk grassland has been identified by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust and Butterfly Conservation as an area crucial in providing a stepping stone between areas rich in wildlife. Improvements here will help create an area through which isolated wildlife populations can hopefully safely traverse and interact with each other.
Tea/Coffee, refreshments and biscuits will be provided by the leader.
Please contact the leader and look out for their email advertising the task to find out whereabouts we will be working.
Leader on 07971 036166.
task Sun 25th Pamber Forest Coppicing
We are back again at Pamber to continue the coppicing program.
Tea/Coffee, refreshments and biscuits will be provided by the leader.
Please contact the leader and look out for their email advertising the task to find out whereabouts we will be working.
Leader on 07425 160394.
February 2015
meet Tue 3rd Red Lion, Mortimer West End Committee Meeting
Regular meeting to discuss the running of BCV, starting at 8pm. All welcome.
Contact on 01189 700155.
task Sun 8th College Copse Farm Hedge laying
Another new site for us this winter, this is a farm newly managed by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, near Hook.
Tea/Coffee, refreshments and biscuits will be provided by the leader.
Please contact the leader and look out for their email advertising the task to find out whereabouts we will be working.
Leader on 01635 268482.
task Sun 22nd Pamber Forest Coppicing
This is our final coppicing task of the programme. This should be just in time for the dormant woodland herbs beneath the coppice to get cracking over March and April. Make sure to visit again over this time to see the results of all your hard work this winter!
Tea/Coffee, refreshments and biscuits will be provided by the leader.
Please contact the leader and look out for their email advertising the task to find out whereabouts we will be working.
Leader on 01635 49304.
