Calendar of Events - July to October 2014

It is a good idea to contact the organizer or task leader of the events before attending so that we can cater for numbers and arrange lifts if needed. All telephone numbers are Basingstoke area (01256) unless the code is given - you should also be able to contact the leader during the 2 days leading up to the task on the leader's mobile phone (the number is in the newsletter). Meet at 10am at the project site or at the toolshed at 9.30, unless other times are given. The numbers are OS grid references of the meet up point for the projects. Some of the sites are difficult to find, so if it's your first visit to a site, we'd recommend meeting us at the toolshed and then following the leader (who should know where he/she is going!) to the site.
Details in red are changes from the programme published in the newsletter.

July 2014
task Sun 6th Pamber Forest Grass cutting / birch clearance

July marks the time for the hay cut in Pamber Forest. This sunny, long and linear meadow is flanked by high woodland cover to one side and lower more thickly vegetated coppice coops on the other. Its many herbaceous plants and grasses (which are crowded out in the neighbouring woodland habitats) are exploited by a myriad of invertebrates looking for nectar, cover or a place to roost, which will be in turn eaten by birds and bats. Look out for butterflies such as the Silver Washed Fritillary and Ringlet feeding while on task.
Tea/Coffee, refreshments and biscuits will be provided by the leader.
Please contact the leader beforehand to let them know you are attending.
Leader on 07425 160394.
task Sun 20th Pamber Forest Tree-felling

This task was planned to be water-gate maintenance, but the water levels are too high, so instead we will be working in the wood-pasture area, felling some trees. We will be working alongside the HIWWT weekend group.
Tea/Coffee, refreshments and biscuits will be provided by the leader.
Please contact the leader beforehand to let them know you are attending.
Leader on 07848 007947.

September 2014
task Sun 7th Sherbourne St John Meadow Cut
This small site is a surviving fragment of a much larger wet meadow. The current owners have managed it admirably for its wildlife interest for years but now require some help.
Spaces are limited for this task so please contact the leader beforehand to let them know you are interested in coming.
Leader on 07971 036166.
task Sun 21st Pamber Forest Coppicing

The first coppicing task of the season. Coppicing was a traditional practice of producing materials from under-wood, usually Hazel. It creates a series of open spaces in different stages of growth and each stage is exploited by a range of different species. The high biodiveristy value this creates ensures that this practice remains a priority of woodland conservation.
BCV will be mimicking this practice by cutting the hazel, creating the odd habitat pile and burning the brash on a bonfire.
Please contact the leader beforehand to let them know you are attending.
Leader on 07425 160394.
meeting Tue 30th Red Lion Pub Committee Meeting

Committee meeting at the Red Lion pub, Mortimer West End to discuss the next programme. Meeting time is 8pm.

Please contact the leader and look for their email with the task details beforehand.
Leader on 01635 49304.
social Sat 18th Mike's House Quiz

This evening sees the return of the BCV DIY Quiz Night.
The idea is that each person brings along their own set of 20 questions so they can be quiz master for one round. The subject for your round is up to you so feel free to be creative!
Please also bring along some drinks and nibbles to help the evening along. Start time is 7.30pm.
Contact on 01635 268482 for more info.
task Sun 26th Ashford Hill Scrub bash

We will be visiting Ashford Hill NNR, the only National Nature Reserve on BCV's patch. Managed by Natural England, National Nature Reserves are designated because they are deemed to be the finest examples of their habitats around, in this case lowland neutral grassland.
We will be helping with the scrub management regime.
Please contact the leader beforehand to find out the details. The site can be wet so parking can be tricky.
Leader on 01189 700155.
