Calendar of Events - November 2013 to February 2014

It is a good idea to contact the organizer or task leader of the events before attending so that we can cater for numbers and arrange lifts if needed. All telephone numbers are Basingstoke area (01256) unless the code is given - you should also be able to contact the leader during the 2 days leading up to the task on the leader's mobile phone (the number is in the newsletter). Meet at 10am at the project site or at the toolshed at 9.30, unless other times are given. The numbers are OS grid references of the meet up point for the projects. Some of the sites are difficult to find, so if it's your first visit to a site, we'd recommend meeting us at the toolshed and then following the leader (who should know where he/she is going!) to the site.
Details in red are changes from the programme published in the newsletter.

October
meeting Wed 9th Red Lion Pub Committee Meeting
It's meeting time again, this time we're planning the next programme of events at the Red Lion in Mortimer West End. Starts at 8pm.
Contact: .
task Sun 13th Pamber Forest Coppicing
It is time to go back to Pamber again to continue with this autumn's coppicing programme. This may or may not be in the same place as the previous task and the leader will confirm this and any change of meeting point before the task.
Leader on 01635 49304.
task Sun 27th Headley Gravel Pits Glade Creation
Sheltered, warm and sunny glades create a useful microhabitat for many species of invertebrate. This will also be an opportunity to increase the spread of neutral grassland, Headley's most valuable habitat.
Parking can be limited on the reserve so be sure to watch out for the leader's email or contact the leader regarding alternative parking arrangements.
Leader on 07971 036166.
November 2013
task Sun 10th Pamber Forest Coppicing
This marks the first of several tasks at BCV's adopted home site. Coppicing was a traditional practice of producing materials from underwood, usually Hazel. It creates a series of open spaces in different stages of growth and each stage is exploited by a range of different species. The high biodiveristy value this creates ensures that this practice remains a priority of woodland conservation.
BCV will be mimicking this practice by cutting the hazel, creating the odd habitat pile and burning the brash on a nice bonfire. Tea/Coffee, refreshments and biscuits will be provided by the leader. Please contact the leader and look out for their email advertising the task to find the details.
Leader on 01256 420818.
task Sun 24th Aldersbrook Farm Scrub bash
The combined effect of BCV's scrub removal and the establishment of a grazing regime by the owner should now be shaping the site for the benefit of wildlife. A lot of progress has been made in clearing the scrub alongside the brook and it is now almost gone. We will be shifting our attention to the scrub on the other side of the field this winter.
Tea/Coffee, refreshments and biscuits will be provided by the leader.
Please contact the leader and look out for their email to find out the details.
Leader on 07848 007947.
December 2013

Leader on 01256 420818.

The combined scrub removal and grazing regime will help with the restoration of the rare and valuable grassland habitat that has gained this site its designation as a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation.
Tea/Coffee, refreshments and biscuits will be provided by the leader.
Please contact the leader and look out for their email to find out the task details.
Leader on 01635 268482.

social Sun 2nd TBD Bird-watching trip
Join us on a trip to see some of the birds that visit the south of Britain during the winter months. Depending on the prevailing conditions, we could be visiting one of the coastal reserves around the Solent to see geese, wildfowl and waders, or maybe travelling to the New Forest in search of Hawfinches and Hen Harriers.
The exact destination will be decided during the week before. However, we will be meeting up in Basingstoke at about 9.30 and expect to be out most of the day.
