Calendar of Events - November 2012 to February 2013

It is a good idea to contact the organizer or task leader of the events before attending so that we can cater for numbers and arrange lifts if needed. All telephone numbers are Basingstoke area (01256) unless the code is given - you should also be able to contact the leader during the 2 days leading up to the task on the leader's mobile phone (the number is in the newsletter). Meet at 10am at the project site or at the toolshed at 9.30, unless other times are given. The numbers are OS grid references of the meet up point for the projects. Some of the sites are difficult to find, so if it's your first visit to a site, we'd recommend meeting us at the toolshed and then following the leader (who should know where he/she is going!) to the site.
Details in red are changes from the programme published in the newsletter.

The new task programme starts with a good variety in November, including pond clearance, scrub bashing and coppicing. As winter really takes hold, we're focusing on HWT reserves, with work at Pamber Forest, Headley Gravel Pits, Noar Hill and (a new site for us) Bramshot Heath.
The social activity includes some indoor activities such as a museum visit and some Christmas silly games. In the new year we'll be outside more, taking on a winter walk and also a birdwatching trip to the south coast.

October 2012
task Sun 7th Pamber Forest Coppicing
Today's work is a continuation of the last two tasks in this programme.
Meeting point will be sent out in the week leading up to the task.
Contact : on 07971 036166.
meeting Wed 10th Red Lion Committee Meeting
It's meeting time at the Red Lion Pub in Mortimer West End once more. This evening we'll be planning the programme of tasks and socials for the four months starting November.
Note: date change. Was originally October 3rd. Starting time is 8pm.
Contact : for more details.
social Fri 12th Pamber Forest Moth Night
HWT: Graham is running this moth evening in Pamber Forest. Moth traps will be used, emitting bright light to draw in the moths, which Graham will then identify. Please bring along a torch and you may also find a pair of sunglasses useful.
Meeting at Impstone Road entrance at 8pm.
Contact: on 01189 700155.
task Sun 21st Foxlease Meadow Coppicing
We complete this programme of events with a trip to Foxlease Meadow HWT reserve near to Fleet. When grazing ceased in the 1980s, parts of the meadow were lost to scrub and the aim of this task is to continue the process of cutting this back, to open up corridors between the surviving open areas, assisting the passage of insects and seeds between them. All arisings will be burnt, unless volunteers wish to take some home to put on their open fire.
Meet in the car park behind King George V cottages at 10:30.
Contact : on 07425 160394.
November 2012
task Sun 4th Aldersbrook Farm Scrub Bash
We're hoping it will be a case of third-time lucky at this privately owned site close to Headley; our first visit in 2012 coincided with the single (very) wet day in March and then when we returned in August, it was the hottest weekend of the year!
Falling within HWT's Enbourne Valley Living Landscapes area, this site is important both in its own right and as a stepping stone between other wildlife sites, thus reducing the vulnerability of species that survive in isolated pockets. Once again we will be doing battle with the blackthorn scrub that was taking over - we have now defeated the widest part of the thicket, so progress should be more rapid in coming tasks.
The leader will send out details of the meeting up point in the week before the task.
Contact : on 01189 700155.
task Sun 18th Newnham Ponds Typha removal
These ponds are important sites for great-crested newts, and need to be gradually cleared of the typha that was slowly but surely swamping them.
The water level was incredibly low on our visit last November, but somehow I doubt that we'll find such easy conditions again this time around! If numbers permit, we will carry out some work on the smaller pond first before moving across the green to the main pond.
Note that it is essential to inform the leader that you will be attending as this task is dependent upon the weather and (the lack of) newt activity, so may have to be pulled at the last minute.
Meet at the green in Newnham (SU 705 541).
Contact : on 420818.
task Sun 25th Pamber Forest Coppicing
Pamber Forest is BCV's premier reserve and probably the most popular with volunteers. The last programme saw two fine days of coppicing with lots of volunteers, sandwiching a very wet day which was unsurprisingly a bit less productive. To find out more about coppicing and Pamber, take a look here.
Today we will continue the coppicing programme, probably working near to Bowmont's Brook.
The leader will confirm the meeting up point in the week before the task.
Contact: on 01635 49304.
December 2012
social Sun 2nd Oxford Museum Visit
Oxford is blessed with some excellent museums and today we'll be visiting one or more them. The Ashmolean, Natural History and Pitt Rivers museums are all within a stone's throw of each other and are all free, so there's plenty to keep us busy for the day!
Contact : on 01635 49304 for more information.
meeting Tue 4th Mike's House Committee Meeting
We're meeting up at Mike's house for the mid-programme discussion of how things are going, making future plans etc. All welcome, starting at 8pm.
Contact : on 01635 268482.
task Sun 9th Headley Gravels Pits Scrub bash
This fine HWT reserve is renowned for its green-winged orchids, but has many other qualities too, including populations of dingy and grizzled skipper butterflies.
As there is no grazing, there is a perpetual need to keep scrub at bay and that is the task at hand today.
Note: Parking is very limited at the reserve entrance, so if you travel by car, please park in the lay-by on Ashford Hill Road in Headley and then make the 5 minute walk north-west along the A339 to the reserve entrance (on the left) at SU 512628.
Contact : on 07971 036166.
social Sat 15th Dave's House Christmas Games
We had a hoot last year, tackling physical contortions, brain teasers and just plain daft games, so we're doing it all over again this year, at Dave's house. The plan is for everyone to bring some silly games ideas, a finger food contribution to share and to supply your own drink. Starts at 7pm.
Contact : on 420818 to say you'll be attending and to make sure we don't end up with 200 mince pies and nothing else to eat!
task Sun 16th Pamber Forest Coppicing
It will be time for the traditional pre-Christmas task at Pamber Forest. We'll be coppicing again, most likely continuing the work started on 25th November. Hopefully all volunteers will be in festive mood after an evening of fun and games at Dave's house.
The leader will confirm the meeting up point in the week before the task.
Contact: on 07425 160394.
January 2013
social Sun 6th Somewhere Local Winter walk
We're starting off the new year in our traditional manner, which is to have a bracing winter walk to help clear the system of those Christmas excesses.
Dave will provide details of the planned route a little nearer the time. We will meet up at 10am and there may well be the option of a pub lunch.
Contact : on 420818 for further details.
task Sun 13th Noar Hill Scrub bashing
We kick off the 2013 task programme with a visit to one of the jewels in the HWT crown. You wouldn't necessarily know it on a winter's day, but in the summer this reserve of humps and hollows close to Selbourne is home to a tremendous variety of orchid species. It is also one of the few remaining strongholds of the endangered Duke of Burgundy butterfly, so a day's work here is very much a day well spent.
Today's task is to clear some scrub near the centre of the reserve. We will be working with a local group of HWT volunteers, so this is also a chance to make some new friends.
The leader will provide details of where to meet during the week before the task.
Contact: on 07848 007947.
task Sun 27th Pamber Forest Coppicing
This task is a continuation of those held in November and December.
Contact: on 07771 805000.
February 2013
task Sun 3rd Pamber Forest Coppicing
This is the last chance to work at Pamber in this task programme; hopefully we'll be able to look back on a successful season as the early signs of spring begin to show in the forest.
Contact: on 07971 036166.
meeting Tue 5th Red Lion Pub Committee Meeting
It's committee meeting time again at the Red Lion pub, starting at 8pm. We'll be finalizing details of the Spring 2013 programme and planning other future events. All welcome.
Contact : for more info.
social Sun 10th South Coast Birdwatching trip
Mike is leading this trip to the south coast, to hopefully see many of the birds that make Britain's coastline one of the best places in the world to see maritime birds in their winter homes.
The exact location and meeting time will be announced nearer the time.
Contact : on 01635 268482 for further details.
task Sun 17th Bramshot Heath Scrub bash
We'll be finishing off this task programme by working on a new site for BCV.
Bramshot Heath is part of the HWT Grazing Reserves project and is close to Fleet. We are not able to confirm further details at the moment due to some access issues, but hopefully these will have been resolved well before this task comes around.
Contact: on 01635 268482.
March 2013 onwards
Details for March 2013 onwards will appear towards the end of February ...
