Calendar of Events - June to October 2011

It is a good idea to contact the organizer or task leader of the events before attending so that we can cater for numbers and arrange lifts if needed. All telephone numbers are Basingstoke area (01256) unless the code is given - you should also be able to contact the leader during the 2 days leading up to the task on the leader's mobile phone (the number is in the newsletter). Meet at 10am at the project site or at the toolshed at 9.30, unless other times are given. The numbers are OS grid references of the meet up point for the projects. Some of the sites are difficult to find, so if it's your first visit to a site, we'd recommend meeting us at the toolshed and then following the leader (who should know where he/she is going!) to the site.
Details in red are changes from the programme published in the newsletter.

We start this year's summer programme with the annual hay cut at Pamber Forest and have plenty of haymaking, scrub bashing and then (later on) coppicing, so hopefully there's something to meet everyone's taste.
There is also plenty of variety in the programme of social events that we have planned. These include a bike ride, a hunt for glow worms and a day's birdwatching for the energetic members and a BBQ and photograph evening for those who prefer less exercise!

July 2011
social Sat 9th Old Burghclere Glow worm hunt
We'll meet up at the Royal Oak pub in Ecchinswell from 8pm onwards and then at around 9:30 head off to the Old Burghclere Lime Pits nature reserve in search of glow worms.
Contact on 01256 420818.
project Sun 10th Pamber Forest Haymaking
The summer programme starts at Pamber Forest with the annual hay cut on the meadow alongside Bowmont's Brook. This area of the forest is not grazed, so without the annual cut, the meadow would soon revert to scrubby woodland, resulting in the loss of the meadow flora and fauna.
Our task will be to rake up and stack the hay, thus preventing both the underlying plants from being smothered and a build-up of nutrients in the soil, which would result in the more robust grasses and plants dominating the sward.
Contact : on 07425 160394.
social Sat 16th Mike's House BBQ
Mike is hosting the annual BCV BBQ at his house in Ecchinswell. Arrive from 4pm onwards and we'll aim to eat at around 6pm. Please bring along your own drink and some food to put on the BBQ and then arrange with Mike to bring something else for general consumption.
Contact on 01635 268482.
project Sun 24th Headley Gravel Pits Haymaking / Scrub cut
This old gravel pit, just north of Headley, is now home to Hampshire's finest collection of green-winged orchids and much more besides.
Today's task is to push back the scrub that is forever trying to invade the open areas. We'll be cutting a mixture of grasses and low scrub.
Note: Parking is very limited at the reserve entrance, so if you travel by car, please park in the lay-by on Ashford Hill Road in Headley and then walk north-west along the A339 to the reserve entrance (on the left) at SU 512628.
Contact : on 07848 007947.
August 2011
project Sun 7th Sherbourne Meadow Fen cut
After a successful task last year, we are returning to this privately-owned, wet meadow at Sherbourne to help the owner implement the management plan recommended by HWT, to improve its wildlife value.
Numbers on this task will need to be controlled both to avoid damage to the meadow and to manage parking, so it is essential that volunteers contact the leader before the task.
Contact : on 01635 268482.
social Sun 14th North Hants Bike Ride
Dave is leading this bike ride that will take in the North Hampshire HWT reserves of Old Burghclere Lime Pits and Ron Ward's Meadow. We'll meet up at 10am, probably at Silchester Green.
You should take a packed lunch.
Contact on 01256 420818 for more details.
meeting Wed 17th Paul's house Committee Meeting
Paul is hosting the mid programme committee meeting, where we take stock of how things are progressing and discuss ideas for the future. Starts at 7:30pm.
Contact on 01635 49304 for more info.
project Sun 28th Knightsbridge Farm Scrub bash
Following on from the very fruitful day earlier in the year, we are returning to Knightsbridge Farm, north of Headley, to resume battle with the dense scrub that threatens to overrun this meadow. This is another private site where the owner is being advised by HWT on land management and it lies within HWT's strategic Enbourne Valley Living Landscapes area.
Hopefully we can make another big dent in the scrub today! The exact meeting place will be announced in the week leading up to the task.
Contact : on 01189 700155.
September 2011
project Sun 4th Pamber Forest Coppicing
It's September, which means that the coppicing season is with us again, so we're off to Pamber Forest to start on this season's plan of action.
Coppicing was the dominant method of harvesting woodlands for firewood until the middle of the 20th century. The periodical cutting of the lower shrub-layer resulted in a habitat that suited specialist woodland flora and hence the invertebrate species that depend upon them. Once coppicing declined, the forest floor grew ever darker, resulting in the widespread loss of the specialist flora and therefore diversity in the woodlands.
We now coppice the woodland to preserve, and hopefully extend, areas that retain the woodland flora that was once widespread throughout the country's woodland. A walk through Pamber Forest during the spring months shows how valuable this work is – the carpets of woodland flowers with their attendant insects are a wonderful sight.
The exact meeting place will be announced in the week before the task.
Contact : on 01635 49304.
project Sun 18th Ancell's Farm Birch Bash
Ancell's Farm has been managed as a nature reserve by HWT since 1984 and over the years the meadows have had varying amounts of birch growing in them. HWT are now approaching the end of a very important phase to restore it back to an open landscape, using cattle grazing to keep it that way. This also ensures the ditches are open for aquatic plants and odonata (damselflies and dragonflies).
Today we will be clearing trees along a ditch line, meaning more sunlight will reach the water encouraging more aquatic plant growth, which will in turn provide a habitat for insects and other fauna.
If you have a wood burner, make sure your boot is empty so you can take home some logs.
Note: Start time is 10:30.
Contact : on 01256 420818.
project Sun 25th North Warnborough Scrub Clearance
Today we are working on HWT's reserve at North Warnborough. Usually we work along the edge of the greens, which are wet meadows. However, there is also an area of woodland just north of the greens and today we will be cutting back the scrub along a ride within the woodland, to improve its value for butterflies and other invertebrates.
Meeting place is on the west side of the track that runs north-east from Hook Road at SU 724 524. Precise details will be published in the week before the task
Contact : on 07771 805000.
October 2011
social Sun 2nd South Coast Bird watching
Early October is the prime time for birds to be returning to their wintering grounds after the breeding season. Join us at a location on the south coast to see what is passing through on the way to warmer climes. Exact times and meeting place will be provided a few days beforehand.
Contact on 01635 268482 for more details.
project Sun 9th Noar Hill Coppicing
Of all the places that we work, Noar Hill holds the record for the most species of orchid! This unique reserve lies on the South Downs chalk and in times past was mined, leading to a terrain of humps and hollows, creating an array of habitats and thus allowing many different plant species to find their particular niche.
Today we will be coppicing hazel in the adjacent woodland to improve its wildlife value.
Contact : on 01256 420818.
meeting Mon 10th Red Lion Pub Committee Meeting
It's time for us to organize the winter Events Programme. All are welcome to join us at the Red Lion in Mortimer West End at 7:30pm.
Please note new date!
social Sat 15th Dave's House Photo evening
Dave is hosting a photo evening, starting at 7pm. Everyone is welcome to bring along their own best pictures or to just turn up and enjoy what others have to show off. Don’t bring too many – just selected highlights please.
Photos should be on digital media - either memory-sticks and/or flash cards.
Contact on 01256 420818 for more details.
project Sun 23rd Pamber Forest Coppicing
It's high time we had another coppicing task in Pamber Forest, and today is the day. We'll be continuing the work started on September 4th.
Contact : on 07971 036166.
November 2011 onwards
Full details for November onwards will be published in October ...
